This Bainbridge Island foursome blends vocals, guitar and bass to perform ballads of the sea and holiday favorites.

During the afternoon, in addition to holiday music, we will be offering free activities like ornament making, card making, and coloring aboard the Virginia V.  Nearby, MOHAI (The Museum of History and Industry) will have holiday crafts, and The Center for Wooden Boats will have cookie decorating.  There will be free snacks like cookies, hot cider and cocoa.  Historic vessels like the 1889 tugboat Arthur Foss, 1922 steamship Virginia V, and the 1909 yacht Lotus will be open for boarding.  The event will lead up to the arrival of the Argosy Christmas Ships in the early evening, about 7 pm.

The event is sponsored by The At Lake Union Park Working Group (including The Center for Wooden Boats, The Steamer Virginia V Foundation, Northwest Seaport, Maritime Folknet, and MOHAI).

Maritime Folknet had our first Annual Membership Meeting/Party on October 11. Thank you to all those members who were there. Those of you couldn’t attend missed a fun conversation, good music, and fabulous door prizes for all! But there’s always next year.

Quick recap: Since we got our federal non-profit status, we bought a sound system, paid off our loan, and have begun paying musicians. Our budget is growing, and we have plans to offer more free maritime music performances and workshops in 2015.

The maritime heritage organizations at Lake Union in Seattle will have a collaborative event on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 24, called Holiday Lights.  As part of the activities, there will be three hours of maritime and holiday music on the Virginia V, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, sponsored by Maritime Folknet.  Chris Roe, with her concertina and enchanting voice, will start off the music at 2:00 pm.  J. W. Sparrow will follow at 3 pm, with his Northwest stories in song.  Dan Roberts, from 4 to 5 pm, will round out the afternoon with his usual wit & humor, delivered in a deep bass-baritone.

Also on the Virginia V will be children’s craft activities from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, including ornament and card making.  Kids will be able to color a picture of Santa visiting the Arthur Foss, and will be able to tour the Arthur Foss themselves, next to the Virginia V at the Historic Ships Wharf, 860 Terry Ave N.  The festivities will continue into the evening with some music from MOHAI and the arrival of the Argosy lighted ships.

Admission and crafts are free.

NEW CD:
‘Tales From The Bar – Songs of the Lower Columbia River’
Has Been Released!

The CD contains 19 songs by 17 different performers, about the Columbia River Bar and the area near the mouth of the Columbia River. Ten of the songs have not been released before. More information and liner notes will appear over the next few months on this web site.

Maritime Folknet is aiding the maritime community by providing assistance with some upcoming events.

Benefit Concert for Teresa Morgan has been changed to a song circle in her memory.

With the sudden passing of Teresa Morgan, the benefit concert has been changed to a song circle in her memory, as an opportunity for community and healing. Please join us as we gather to remember and honor Teresa. Donations will be given to Teresa’s family to cover her final expenses. The location will be the Center for Wooden Boats, from 7 to 10 pm.

Later, there will be a memorial/life remembrance event for Teresa, at a date and location yet to be announced.

Please read the message from Jan Elliott-Glanister on the Victory Music web site. She has some good advice about dealing with this unexpected loss.

The series of benefit concerts planned for 2012 might continue, to establish a fund for musicians in need, in memory of Teresa. This has not yet been decided.

There will be a memorial service for Teresa Morgan at Immanuel Lutheran Church on December 18 at 5 pm. Stories and pictures are welcome.

If you would like, you can bring a special Christmas ornament in dedication to Teresa and Arwen, to be given to Lara and her family. You may bring an ornament on the 11th or the 18th.

Free All–Day SEA MUSIC FEST on Oct. 23, 2010

Maritime Folknet will be presenting a free all-day Sea Music Fest on October 23, from 10 am to 4 pm, in collaboration with Northwest Seaport and Discovery Modelers.

You can hear six different maritime music acts while shopping for used books, rummage, CDs and maritime collectibles.There will be activities for all ages, including a coloring area for kids, and displays of ship models.

At the CD release party, you will be able to meet some of the musicians and hear some of the songs performed live.  Free snacks and beverages, and a chance to tour the historic Arthur Foss.

Performing will be The Whateverly Brothers, Watch the Sky, Chris Roe, Cannery Row, Jon Pfaff & Mary Garvey, and probably several others. Dejah Leger will be there, as will Matthew Moeller.  Tugboat Bromberg will be there, and will bring copies of his brand new CD, “Here There Be Pirates”.  See the Tugboat

After the performances, there will be a chantey sing/jam session until around 6:30 pm.

It’s predicted to be partly sunny on Sunday afternoon, with no rain, but if we get any sprinkles we will have canopies up for both performers and audience so you will stay dry. (Except for your choice of free beverages.)  The event is for all ages in a family atmosphere, but there will be adult beverages available for those that want them, and of course soft drinks and water.

The Northwest Tugboat Tales is available for sale online at CD Baby. Or, you can buy a copy at the Northwest Seaport Chantey Sing on the second Friday of every month.  To find the date and location of the next sing, check the Northwest Seaport website.

Over a hundred people attended the Tugboat Show at the Northwest Folklife Festival, which included some of the performers and songs from the Northwest Tugboat Tales CD.
