Headed Out for Home

By Alice Winship

Chorus: We’re headed out for home
Our time with you has flown
So pack your gear and down your beer
            We’re headed out for home

We’ve made good friends
We’re headed out for home
But all things end
We’re headed out for home

We’ve laughed and sung
We’re headed out for home
We’ve got to run
We’re headed out for home

Chorus

Goodbye my friend
We’re headed out for home
Let’s meet again
We’re headed out for home

Chorus

We’ll sing somewhere
We’re headed out for home
I’ll see you there
We’re headed out for home

Notes

Headed Out for Home is an attempt to write a song in ‘call and response’ chantey format, in the mold of traditional songs like One More Day or Haul Away Joe.

It has the cheerful energy of many ‘outward bound’ chanteys, although the lyrics express the sadness of farewell.

The lyrics bring to mind a ship setting out on a voyage. But it could also refer to the farewell gathering at any of the music events that we have here in the Northwest:

Rainycamp (January), Singtime Frolics (March), Northwest Folklife Festival (May), Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival (September), Tumbleweed Music Festival (September), Sunnycamp (October), Vancouver Folk Song Society Retreat (October).
